WHITE-FACED HERON (Ardea novaehollandiae)
Biodiversity > Birds > Land Birds

Whitefaced heron

A large grey bird with white face, this species inhabits swampy areas around the settlement and the seashore at low tide.

First recorded breeding on the island in the 1930's, this species is probably breeding here because of the changes to the environment made by the early settlers- clearing of rainforest for pasture.
