Update on eHive cataloguing project

The LHI Historical Society is continuing the project to log all artefacts held at the Museum onto the web based collections catalogue called eHive.

The LHI Historical Society is picking up the project to log all artefacts held at the Museum onto the web based collections catalogue called eHive. This will make the rich cultural items held at the LHI Museum accessible to people around the world.

Over a number of years the LHIHS committee has researched to identify and make some notes about origin and ownership of many items that were collected by Jim Dorman, the founder and Curator of the Lord Howe Island Museum.

A carabiner used by rock climbers on the first attempt to climb Ball’s Pyramid in 1964. This and a few other items were donated by David Larkin in 2014. David was on the first ascent attempt of Balls Pyramid. This was unsuccessful, and in 1965 climbers from Sydney University rock climbers made the first successful ascent of Balls Pyramid.
The swimming cap worn by Lynton Mortensen on his historic first swim circumnavigation of Lord Howe Island in February 2021.
A piece of the steel hull from HMS Nottingham than ran aground on Wolf Rock off the Island in July 2002. Donated by Troy Bernardi, electrician at Garden Island, who was involved in the preparation of HMS Nottingham for transport back to UK; it was given to Lance Wilson for the LHI Museum.
A fob watch owned by early settler Nathan Thompson from the 1850’s. Many Island residents today are descendants of Nathan Thompson.
The 1890’s bell from the steamship Ovalau, that caught fire and sank off the Island in 1903. Many Island resident divers had been to the wreck site over the years, and this was donated by Greg and Ellis Whitfield.
A violin made from a cigar box by school teacher Max Nichols in the 1940s, which he used to teach violin, and play at dances on the Island. Max had been in WWI and made similar violins at the front in Europe.
A piece of fabric with the registration letter Z off the wing of Francis Chichester’s Gypsy moth floatplane that was upturned in a storm while anchored in the lagoon at the Island in 1931. He stayed on the island for 9 weeks and repaired the seaplane and flew to Jervis Bay!!! Donated by Jim and Mavis Fitzgerald.
A framed photograph taken by the government photographer W. Sharkey in 1882. He accompanied a party of officials who visited the Island on the NSW Government steamer Thetis. Jim Dorman found this and four others in the Lands Department office in Sydney, and arranged for their donation to the LHI Museum.
