Today, looking around the island at the signs identifying business offices and venues, there are some very slick, professional productions, with stunning high quality photographs illustrating business services.
It hasn’t always been so, with many signs having been handmade on the island.
In 2006 the museum canvassed residents and businesses for old signs on the Island, or photographs of them, and now the archives have quite a range of images of signs.
These are important to preserve, as a record of former residents and businesses, reflecting styles and way of life of the times. Here is a selection of some of these old signs.
